Concerns about the negative effects of climate change are growing. Many inner cities are becoming more vigilant about air quality and have announced that only zero-emission vehicles will be welcome in the future. Reducing nitrogen and particulate matter has been high on the global agenda for some time now. By applying Modal Shift to more environmentally friendly inland shipping, a major step has already been taken towards the cleaner transport of goods, but in order to remain environmentally friendly, making the fleet more sustainable has been given a high priority. Inland shipping still has a step to take in this regard. In road transport, the strict Euro VI standard has been in force since 2013 and specific legislation was passed in 2019 regarding further requirements for CO2 emissions from trucks. For maritime shipping there is an EEDI/EEIO methodology and there is a reporting obligation at ship level for energy consumption/CO2. Of course, these situations cannot be compared one-on-one with inland shipping. Every ship is unique, just considering the variation in ships and the lifespan of the engines. Inland shipping therefore requires a different specific approach.

The Inland Shipping Emission Performance Label was created to encourage greening and thereby achieve an emission reduction. With this label the durability of the ship can be demonstrated. The application for a label is not mandatory. By submitting a technical measurement report of your engines, you can demonstrate the emission level of your marine engines and request a corresponding Inland Navigation Emission Performance Label. The ship with the ‘cleanest’ label can benefit from this. This includes discounts on berth fees and insurance.
