Stage V for Medium Speed Engines: Innovation and Sustainability Go Hand in Hand
Stage V for medium speed engines demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, and how an existing engine can be prepared for a sustainable future — in a cost-effective way, without compromising on environmental goals or the long-term business case.
Until recently, it seemed impossible to equip a medium speed engine with an emission aftertreatment system that was compact enough to fit into the existing engine room — and most importantly, would not cause excessive backpressure. Medium speed engines are highly sensitive to backpressure; too much of it can damage the engine.
Replacing a well-functioning medium speed engine with a new one? That’s not sustainable — and we have the solution. For the first time, our in-house engineers have successfully equipped a medium speed engine with an emission aftertreatment system that fully meets the current Stage V standard. A system that:
Is compact: it replaces the existing silencer.
Is scalable: suitable for most medium speed engines.
Is affordable: no new engine needed, while maintaining the current engine room footprint.
Is truly sustainable: keeps a good engine in use while reducing harmful emissions.
Is clean: emits very few soot particles, NOx values are well below the Stage V standard, and the backpressure is even lower than with the original silencer.
Every aftertreatment system we install — in collaboration with the customer’s shipyard — undergoes an official E3 test under real-world operating conditions by an independent certification company. This proves that every engine equipped with our system complies with the current Stage V standard.
