MARIN & RWS

MARIN conducts research for commercial clients, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) and the Ministry of VenW. For RWS, MARIN investigates how the IJssel can remain properly and safely navigable at different water levels.

We look at the navigability of the IJssel over a stretch from the IJssel head to Deventer. We examine the condition of the bottom of the navigable channel of this stretch of river and the way in which the permitted vessels sail. For this we use, for example, anonymized AIS data. We look for bottlenecks, simulate the various solutions and give advice to RWS so that safe and smooth navigation can be maintained.

Another study conducted for RWS is to what extent shallow water periods affect fuel consumption during a trip between Rotterdam and Duisburg. In this study, we stated that a certain amount of cargo should be transported at normal water levels, at shallow water levels and at extremely shallow water levels. The result of this study shows that vastly more fuel is required at the extremely shallow water level.

By keeping up with what is going on in inland navigation, we can give specific advice to use less or a different fuel, to sail cleaner or to sail longer during periods of shallow water. We do this with model tests in our tow tanks, full-scale measurements, Computional Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and with simulations.
